Overview

Ichiban Japanese Steakhouse & Pub, nestled in the heart of Winnipeg at 189 Carlton St, offers an authentic Japanese steakhouse experience that blends vibrant flavors with engaging entertainment. Known for its warm and inviting atmosphere, Ichiban caters to a diverse crowd—whether you're seeking a full-course dinner, fresh sushi rolls, or a lively evening at the pub with friends.

The main draw here is the teppanyaki-style dining where skilled chefs bring the meal to life with theatrical flair. Flames dance atop the onion towers, and eggs artfully fly through the air, crafting not just food but memorable moments. This blend of culinary artistry and performance makes Ichiban more than a meal—it’s a night out. Regular patrons, like one who fondly recalled a longtime chef with decades of experience, highlight the consistency of fun and flavor that defines the place.

Ichiban’s menu excels at showcasing Japanese staples with a modern twist. Signature dishes like the Filet Mignon and Lobster or Teriyaki Salmon capture a balance of tenderness and savory depth. Their handmade sushi rolls—spicy salmon, dynamite, and classic tuna—are fresh, vibrant, and perfectly crafted, often praised by guests for their quality and taste. The Chicken Fried Rice and Calamari appetizers complement the mains, while desserts such as Banana Tempura Ice Cream round out the meal with a satisfying crunch and sweetness.

Beyond the food, the pub space offers a relaxed lounge where guests can enjoy cocktails, sake bombs, and wine, all while watching sports on multiple screens. This makes Ichiban appealing to both families celebrating special occasions and groups looking for casual, spirited gatherings. Friendly and attentive staff enhance the experience with their genuine enthusiasm and hospitality, ensuring that whether you’re dining or just snacking, the vibe is always welcoming.

For those who treasure a combination of exceptional food, engaging entertainment, and a lively environment, Ichiban Japanese Steakhouse & Pub stands out as a local gem in Winnipeg. Its ability to delight first-timers and loyal visitors alike, through fresh ingredients and memorable moments, secures its place as a must-visit destination for Japanese cuisine aficionados and casual diners alike.

This place is fantastic. It's open late, and it's great for both a full meal or just for snacks and drinks. It has a nice environment inside, and the folks serving us were very kind. The lounge area's great for having drinks and appetizers with friends, while watching sports on one of the lounge's many TVs. On top of it all, the prices were far better than what we expected for such high quality food. I highly recommend any of their handmade sushi rolls, they're freshly made, and delicious.

It had been awhile since I was here and not much has changed. I was in a group of 12 and the Teppanyaki chef performed a very similar show with the same theme of flames from an onion tower, throwing eggs and dishes and the Sake bomb of warm sake in beer. The evening was decent, would be nice if they changed their act. Recommend for first timers.

This has been a go too place for years and years. Such a fun place to eat at. I hadnt been since 2018, I went for my birthday with a bunch of friends and family, really just a fun time, we had a chef who has been there for 40 yrs, I remember him serving us before, he's a very funny guy. Good time had all around and the food was delicious as I remembered.

Absolutely a standout restaurant! I literally cannot wait to go back! I don’t think I’ve ever had so much fun eating at a restaurant ever. It’s definitely dinner with a show. The fresh/raw food was brought out on platters and you could actually see the quality of the food you were about to enjoy. The staff were friendly and helpful and all seemed to genuinely enjoy their roles. The food was delicious! If you go home hungry from this place it’s your own fault. I absolutely love my take home mug! My panda mug is proudly sitting on my mantle in my living room and I smile remembering the fun we had. Our chef was new to his role but he did a good job, I’m sure he will get his groove and be even better as he works here longer. Our group was so much fun, it felt like strangers turned into friends and I wish we had exchanged some details. So much laughter and smiling at our table. We will definitely be back! Thanks for a great time!!

We had a large gathering on the upper level. The entire staff was most accommodating & welcoming. As many times before, Chef Roger is a fantastic chef & great asset for your business. Everything was delicious from the appetizer, salad and mains as always except the Miso soup that has changed drastically for the worse.
